This new year has been shaped by new beginnings and leaving a legacy.

— Ending 2025 with a Christmas Day photo shoot: New beginnings for Studio 8, and a new beginning for Katie as she starts to carve her own path at university. We explored how tone, texture and colour can influence how you tell your story.

— Starting the New Year with a picnic with friends at Warwick Wine Estate, Stellenbosch: Blankets laid out, food shared, conversations allowed to wander. It was a reminder that work does not always begin at a desk — sometimes it begins in presence, in watching a day unfold without interruption. We took photographs to help shape Studio 8’s new beginnings.

– Exploring Black and White: Black and white is never just a filter—it’s an intentional choice shaped by how and where an image will be seen. This month reminded us that fine art photographs often come alive in print, where paper and tonal depth matter, while screen and editorial work demand clarity, contrast, and immediacy. A great photo in print can look very grey on screen. Knowing the difference and how to intentionally process black and white photographs matters.

— Honouring legacy: This month also saw us quietly continuing work on the posthumous war manuscript and book design, through careful curation, structuring and listening to those who served alongside Terry – allowing space between lines and letting silence do some of the work.

Taken together, these moments form the beginning of the year’s work — not as a declaration, but as an orientation for what’s ahead.
