There is a particular quality of light in a family home on a quiet morning — soft, diffuse, with no particular agenda. It falls across white bed linen in a way no studio can quite replicate. It is exactly the kind of light that suits a baby who is still, essentially, figuring out the world.
This shoot took place in Surrey in April, when the baby in these photographs was in that brief, specific stage between newborn stillness and the full physical confidence of a child who sits up, reaches, rolls, pulls at things. Somewhere in between. Where everything is curiosity and effort and sudden, uncontrollable laughter.
The brief was simple: pay attention. Notice the small things before they change.
A baby's feet at this age carry a particular kind of detail — the soft folds and creases, the way the toes curl and splay, the sole that has not yet met a floor. They are worth photographing properly. Not as a record, but as a portrait in themselves.
What We Were Actually Looking For
Shooting babies well requires a particular kind of patience. You cannot direct a baby. You can only watch, wait, position yourself, and respond.
What emerged from this session was a portrait of a child who is already entirely himself — the full-body laugh that arrived without warning and ended just as fast, the wide-eyed stillness when he found something on the ceiling worth examining, the quiet gravity with which he regarded the lens. These are not expressions you coax. They simply happen, if you are ready.
The round nest, the soft bunny companion, the mother's hands holding those small feet, the way he looks at the world over her shoulder — these are the details that build a picture of a life just beginning. You photograph them now because next month they will already be slightly different. The month after, different again.
